The Grandmasters Revisits Yip Man’s Legacy

Okay, we have all seen Donnie Yen’s portrayal of Grandmaster Yip Man in the movie Ip Man and sadly this means that this upcoming homage to the same man by director Wong Kar Wei will be butchered with comparisons until the cows come home. Still, there is something to this trailer that gets me excited and I’m not sure if it’s the arty look to it or what, but Leung Chiu Wai sure does look a lot like the real Yip Man.

The trailer is standard faire, a bunch of guys jump the master in the middle of the street and he gets them to do the dance of pain by way of the soles of his feet. The rain is dramatic and in the end Yip Man stands indomitable. Call it what you will, it is a pretty exciting lead-in.

The Grandmasters has been a struggle for Wong Kar Wei to finish, facing financial issues, delays (over 8 years believe it or not) and everything else it looks like the film will see the light of day late this year. Chinese fans are skeptical however being that the scandalous Zhang Ziyi is onboard and Yuen Wo Ping is doing the choreography. Still it is worth a gander that it will be an exciting beat-em-up, even if it lacks the heart of Donnie Yen’s Ip Man.
