SouthLAnd Recap 3.1 – Let It Snow
SouthLAnd returned today with the same kickass writing, solid acting and fluid character development that made us fall in love with the show since its inception. Lydia (Regina King) is back with a new partner, an older Latina named Josie Ochoa (Jenny Gago). As we know, Lydia doesn’t warm up quickly to her partners and she would much rather be with her old wounded mainstay Russell (Tom Everett Scott), but he has resigned to desk duty while he awaits his pension. The two get called in on an investigation of a murdered woman and after finding the body tucked away in an attic of her workplace, they grow suspicious of the scratched up handy man who claimed his wounds were from a dog.
Ben McKenzie (Ben Cooper) and John Cooper (Michael Cudlitz) are back, and the dynamic duo could not be anymore opposite as Ben is shown running up stairs for exercise during his off hours while John limps around his house in desperate need of the painkillers that he has been abusing since forever. John’s habit has worsened and by the end of the episode Ben has to literally walk him to his car due to the big man being unable to walk – but no clinic for John, oh no because if he goes they will know that he had swallowed all of his refills, along with the extras fed to him by his ex-wife and he would lose his badge as a newly discovered drug addict. I cannot feel sorry for John, as he refuses all help and there is nobody strong enough in his life to force it on him.
The men join our favorite girl Chickie Brown (Arija Bareikis) now with female partner, in a shootout with two bank robbers in order to save a fallen sergeant with gunshots in his knees. The fight gets ugly and ends with John fatally shooting one in the chest and Ben chasing the other down the street only to see him commit suicide. If you have watched SouthLAnd since the beginning, you may remember the last time Ben encountered death that he didn’t take it all too well. This time he gets depressed again, but drives off into the night at the end of the episode… not with Chickie who had extended an invite (Damn you Ben, get that! She practically begs you every episode!) but with a wealthy cougar that he had pulled over earlier for changing lanes without a signal (slow day).
Detectives Sammy Bryant (Shawn Hatosy) and Nate Moretta (Kevin Alejandro), the weak team of SouthLAnd (in terms of interest, not their ability to do their jobs) are on top of Gangbangers as usual. This time there had been an execution styled murder of two gangsters and the suspect is the father of the young girl that they had raped along with 10 other losers. The most interesting part of their side of SouthLAnd is that Tammi Bryant (Emily Bergl), yes psycho, bad wife Tammi lets Sammy know that she’s pregnant… prep for drama everybody. I do not want to deal with preggo hormone Tammi especially since normal Tammi is way too much. I feel sorry for the young detective, who coincidentally buys her a new camera to replace the one she let her weed head buddy steal from their home. Sigh.
In the end, a long investigation that showed no leads to the obvious guilty man, leads Lydia and Josie to go rogue on the murderer, chasing and ramming his car into a wall, forcing him to take off on foot. This allows us to see Lydia doing what she does best (besides take out punks with a shotgun all badass style) which is to get her Flo-Jo on and walk a guy down at 20 strides… this chick is bullet fast. Slamming the killer to the concrete and cuffing him, the call comes in just in time to confirm to the ladies that the DNA matched and he was indeed the killer. It was a great ending to a great season opener.
