Piranha 3D
The 2010 version of Piranha 3D combines nostalgic themes of horror with a bit of Girls Gone Wild and gore. For viewers of the original 1978 version of the film you may be turned off by the emphasis of breasts and ass over the piranhas but for what its worth it still worked. If you are younger than myself (child of the 80’s) you may have missed out on the cheesy movies that USA would show... [Read more]
Splice
A mid-level thriller with an excellent cast and decent writing, Splice started off slowly then quickly sped up into a race of emotions for this viewer. I went from bored, to empathetic, to disturbed upon the final scene. Splice left me impressed that the premise of the story had actually gone “there”, the “there” being a rather dirty place which most movies would not venture to.... [Read more]
A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)
I hope that my bias against the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise hasn’t clouded my judgment, but the movie that I just watched was awful. I blame it on me expecting too much after suffering through the metamorphosis of the scary Freddie Kruger into the jokingly horrible shadow of himself in the later movies. I expected this reboot to bring about a better story of the Elm Street burning,... [Read more]
The Wolfman (2010)
“Terrible things Lawrence, you’ve done terrible things” I am not typically a fan of remakes and new school takes to old school stories, but in cases like The Wolfman you have to keep an open-mind. You absolutely must see this if you are a horror/gore fan as Director Joe Johnston has given us a reason to fear the hairy monster once again. Benicio Del Toro is a perfect fit... [Read more]
Daybreakers
It always feels good to see writers shoot for a different twist to the over-saturated vampire genre. 2009 while being a positive year for movies in general, was also a bad year for monster movies as the popularity of the Twilight series spawned a ton of badly written scripts in the form of would-be vampire flicks. As a fan myself of the classic novels and the movies that followed –... [Read more]
The Fourth Kind
If you want to see The Fourth Kind due to the great trailers for it I will advise you to stop reading immediately. Go into it blindly, convince yourself that the “footage” is real and that Director Olatunde Osunsanmi was given the rights to use it to make a Box Office movie. Fool yourself into thinking that this woman Dr. Abbey Taylor (Milla Jovovich) is real and that her life has been... [Read more]
Zombieland
Welcome to Zombieland, a light serving of black comedy about the world being overrun by, you guessed it, zombies. Without boring us with an explanation as to why… check 28 Days Later and Dawn of The Dead for explanation, we are made to follow a young college student (Jesse Eisenberg) on his journey to Columbus, Ohio in hopes of finding his parents. Columbus (each character is named... [Read more]
Paranormal Activity
Rare is it during these times do I see a 12:00 am movie release sold out. The trailers show too much, the premise rings reminiscent of many other movies but there is something about Paranormal Activity that has audiences salivating at seeing it. Paranormal Activity is a movie shot from the angle of a standard camera, held by an actor within the movie (like The Blair Witch Project, Quarantine... [Read more]
Pandorum
Claustrophobic, dark, pungent and lonely are the halls of the ship in Pandorum. The visuals were stunning in all scenes ranging from the shots of the various planets, to the bridge of the broken ship. Director Christian Alvart does an excellent job of conveying the hopelessly frightening feeling of living in a prison while being the prey of the inmates. Although I dare not compare the two,... Deadgirl (2008)
I would liken Deadgirl to a modern, more dynamic version of 1986′s Rob Reiner classic Stand by Me. It holds the parallels of teenage bonding, acceptance and a dead body. Shiloh Fernandez and Noah Segan play the parts of troubled teenagers Rickie and J.T. as they tackle the problems of peer pressure, school and their friendship. Like Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain there is an element... [Read more]
Halloween II (2009)
Superb direction for a violent movie that starts out strong, only to drift south into mediocre-ville. Following directly after the first Halloween, the aftermath of Michael Myer’s bloody massacre is played out through the eyes of Laurie Strode (Scout Taylor-Compton). Laurie struggles with the memory of that dreadful night and is visited by nightmares and visions of his return to take... [Read more]
Tokyo Gore Police (2008)
The blood looks thin, yet flows with a crimson that is akin to fruit punch or cranberry juice freshly poured from the bottle. The volume of it seems endless. In the world of the Tokyo Gore Police an Engineer’s wounds can shoot a stream of blood so powerful that it could be used as a form of transportation. Just imagine a man with no legs flying around in the air all from the force of... [Read more]
