Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
What do you get when you take an underground comic book, slap some videogame coolness on it, and then follow it up with a soundtrack written by Beck? Scott Pilgrim vs. The World that’s what! Famed director Edgar Wright, whose awesome work includes Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, went the comic book route to bring us one of the best videogame movies that’s NOT based on an actual... The Last Airbender
Rushed, soulless and harboring some of the worst acting I’ve seen in an adaptation, M.Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender will probably become the blueprint for future Directors as to what not to do when making a movie. Leaving the theater a fan of the Nickelodeon show described what he had seen as a “highlight reel of all the cool things from the first season.” When the credits... [Read more]
A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)
I hope that my bias against the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise hasn’t clouded my judgment, but the movie that I just watched was awful. I blame it on me expecting too much after suffering through the metamorphosis of the scary Freddie Kruger into the jokingly horrible shadow of himself in the later movies. I expected this reboot to bring about a better story of the Elm Street burning,... [Read more]
Clash of The Titans (2010)
I do not know what is worse about this new Clash of Titans, the laziness in them not studying Greek mythology, or the laziness in keeping things relevant to the time period or mythos. Actually I know exactly what it is, it’s the absolute waste of Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes, whose talents and characters was the only shining light in a dark movie of shallow characters, shoddy CGI and light... Alice in Wonderland (2010)
Of all the positives that Alice yielded, the pacing was tops as it started, spanned and ended in very good time. My viewing was done in IMAX 3D but it only reinforced how well Avatar was done to take advantage of the technology. Alice does not need 3D to work, being a colorful, bright and beautiful movie that incorporated a lot of contrastingly dark landscapes to the bright animation. The... [Read more]
The Lovely Bones
A girl dies by the hands of a serial killer who lives next door to her house. We are shown the aftermath of this tragedy through the ghostly eyes of that little girl herself as she observes life moving on without her in it. Fans of the book by Alice Sebold will absolutely hate this movie and demand the firstborn of Peter Jackson for sacrifice. Going into The Lovely Bones I had no idea what... [Read more]
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
Partially a farewell on film to Heath Ledger and partially a satire on the modern age and the phasing out of imagination. The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus will no doubt confuse many audience members as it requires one to read between the lines to pull forth a moral to the story. Director Terry Gilliam brilliantly contrasts the old world traveling show of Dr. Parnassus and company with... [Read more]
The Princess and the Frog
The Princess and The Frog is a beautifully drawn, well animated slice of the standard Disney pie with a Louisiana spin. Although I found all of the characters to be very loveable, I thought that Disney’s “playing it safe” (you know exactly what I mean) due to a bunch of jackasses who blindly let a trailer mislead them, ultimately hurt the movie where it could have been a... Where the Wild Things Are
With probably one of the most unique and intoxicating soundtracks combined with a bizarre story and excellent voice acting, Where the Wild Things Are will easily become a classic. Though I found Max (Max Records) to be an impossibly spoilt little brat at the beginning, the kid grew on me and when he finally started interacting with his furry, imaginary buddies I began to really like him.... 9
A dark but beautiful offering of CGI about a post-apocalyptic world and 9 humanoid robots with a mysterious mission to carry out. Shane Acker directs this movie although the trailers and signs all point to the more popular Tim Burton. To top off this confusion (Burton produced it) we are shown creatures that play more than a little homage to A Nightmare Before Christmas. But even though Shane... [Read more]
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
With heavy emphasis on attractions to the opposite sex and the jealousy that comes with it, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is a transitional tale of both the children’s growth and the breaking of light for darkness. The once lively halls of Hogwartz, lined with young children practicing their magicks and playing games with one other has been swapped for dark foreboding paths,... [Read more]
X-Men Origins: Wolverine
There’s one thing that has always struck a good note with me about Hugh Jackman in movies… the man seems to actually give a damn about his performance. He seems to do his homework, assumes his role and bring across a genuine performance whenever he is working. It is this type of actor that can make a mediocre movie great. When Hugh is happy, you want to laugh with him, when he... [Read more]
