The Last Airbender
Rushed, soulless and harboring some of the worst acting I’ve seen in an adaptation, M.Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender will probably become the blueprint for future Directors as to what not to do when making a movie. Leaving the theater a fan of the Nickelodeon show described what he had seen as a “highlight reel of all the cool things from the first season.” When the credits... [Read more]
The Karate Kid (2010)
This will not be a popular review for 2 reasons, the first being that most people are not martial artists, and the second being that little Jaden Smith already has a ton of haters for whatever reason. Foreword – My Feelings on The Karate Kid series (lengthy) Before getting into the review I must explain a bit about myself. I am a martial artist, have been all my life and will continue... How To Train Your Dragon
First off let me send a big F you out to AMC and every other opportunistic price gouging movie theater that charge $15+ just because a movie has the symbol “3D” on the end of its title. Don’t you jackasses get enough money from pimping your stale popcorn and dusty pretzels off to teenagers anyway? Why do you have to come mafia me out of my money for tickets now? Sheesh, and you HAVE... [Read more]
Alice in Wonderland (2010)
Of all the positives that Alice yielded, the pacing was tops as it started, spanned and ended in very good time. My viewing was done in IMAX 3D but it only reinforced how well Avatar was done to take advantage of the technology. Alice does not need 3D to work, being a colorful, bright and beautiful movie that incorporated a lot of contrastingly dark landscapes to the bright animation. The... [Read more]
The Princess and the Frog
The Princess and The Frog is a beautifully drawn, well animated slice of the standard Disney pie with a Louisiana spin. Although I found all of the characters to be very loveable, I thought that Disney’s “playing it safe” (you know exactly what I mean) due to a bunch of jackasses who blindly let a trailer mislead them, ultimately hurt the movie where it could have been a... Astro Boy (2009)
I’m probably in the minority of reviewers who watched and loved the original black and white cartoon Astro Boy yet found this CGI movie to be quite good. David Bowers, the Director of Flushed Away brings us an adaptation of the original Manga Tetsuwan Atomu (The Mighty Atom), later transferred to the American screen under the name Astro Boy. For lovers of anime, Ozamu Tezuka’s Astro... [Read more]
Where the Wild Things Are
With probably one of the most unique and intoxicating soundtracks combined with a bizarre story and excellent voice acting, Where the Wild Things Are will easily become a classic. Though I found Max (Max Records) to be an impossibly spoilt little brat at the beginning, the kid grew on me and when he finally started interacting with his furry, imaginary buddies I began to really like him.... Speed Racer
As stated by a friend of mine on IM (just now) “going in to see a good movie and having it be good is not as good as going in expecting to see so-so and having it be a lot better.” The Wachowski brothers have done the impossible, which is to take a corny anime/cartoon and successfully transfer it to film. A movie that appeals to both adults and children simultaneously. Speed Racer reminded... [Read more]
The Spiderwick Chronicles
A tale of one dysfunctional family and it’s battle with a power hungry ogre… The Spiderwick Chronicles detail a story of twins Simon and Jared with older sister Mallory moving into a dilapidated house with their mother. The house is the Spiderwick Estate, once owned by their great grand uncle Arthur Spiderwick who vanished mysteriously leaving his wife and daughter. The twins though identical... [Read more]
The Golden Compass
The trailers promised me fantasy, adventure and most of all badass polar bear fights… some of it delivered but regrettably not all. Now I am a big supporter of imaginative epics, I am not a writer with an agenda nor a christian with a beef. That being said, I just cannot refer to the movie as great, I think it had potential but fell way short of it’s mark. I compare it to a boxing match,... [Read more]
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
I went to see Narnia last night with hopes of another Fantasy movie that I could add to my “must have” collection. Upon entering the theater I observed the crowd expecting to see the typical storybook crowd (insert nerdy, glasses wearing stereotypes here) but I was surprised to find families even though it was 12:01 am! Having no clue about the book series and a bit tired but open-minded... [Read more]
