Boardwalk Empire 1.12 – A Return to Normalcy
This is the season finale to one of the best shows on television Boardwalk Empire and as the title suggests it was a return to normalcy. On the surface of things everything is making a turn for the better in Nucky’s (Steve Buscemi) life, Margaret Schroeder (Kelly Macdonald) comes back into his life after realizing that he is her only chance at a higher quality of life (once you’ve tasted the high life, try staying away from it). His jilted brother Eli who he fired for a time to fool the people that moves were being made to clean up the corruption, he reinstates him as sheriff of Atlantic City. And the biggest thorn in his side Arnold Rothstein (Michael Stuhlbarg) decided to eat crow and reach out to him for help in his upcoming indictment for fixing the World Series. Yes it was all sorts of good things happening for the boss of Atlantic City but beneath the surface a darkness was looming.
Jimmy Darmody (Michael Pitt) has a bone to pick with Nucky after learning that he was the pimp who sold his 13 yr old mother to the then 54 yr old Commodore. Elias “Eli” Thompson (Shea Whigham) has always wondered of his brother’s ambitions, believing him to be a rather horrible brother to begin with. The two find solace with the newly healed Commodore, coming off of the poisoning by his maid of so many years (yup she was doing it). The maid was let off of the hook with the police by Nucky who instead gave her a nice sum of money and sent her on her way – a thing that the Commodore did not appreciate. The trio plot something behind Nucky’s back, a wanting to remove him from his throne and I assume place Jimmy Darmody on it. One scene of foreshadowing had Jimmy walking the shores of the beach and looking out into the horizon like Nucky does during the introduction.
Richard Harrow (Jack Huston) is finally unleashed on the hapless Italians after Arnold Rothstein agrees to divulge their hiding places to Nucky, along with 1 million dollars in order to squash the beef and enlist Nucky’s help to get him out of trouble. Al Capone (Stephen Graham) is back, looking clean, scarily serious and reinvented since his chat with the Jewish gentleman. The biggest surprise however is with our friend Nelson Van Alden (Michael Shannon), it seems that Lucy’s (Paz de la Huerta) love box was as good as I assumed and he went ahead got her pregnant during their one night tryst a few episodes ago. How does a holy knight explain his seed being within a fast woman like Lucy is beyond me, but it seems that the Agent will have a whole lot of drama to deal with come season 2.
While not the most exciting ender to an excellent series, it leads to light anticipation for what’s to come in this plotting behind Nucky’s back. Margaret Schroeder has finally come to terms with being a mob wife and so it will be interesting to see how dark Margaret gets in the future.
