Roman Polanski Arrested by Swiss Police

polanski Roman Polanski Arrested by Swiss PoliceAs you may already know, Roman Polanski is an award winning Director and probably one of the most gifted in Hollywood today. He is also famous for one other thing,  being a wanted man. In 1977 The Academy Award-winning director pleaded guilty to having sex with a 13-year-old girl, then fled the United States for France to escape penalty. The victim’s family had allegedly sued the director and received an undisclosed settlement though a warrant was issued in 1978 for his arrest.

Polanski lived in France for decades, even declining to collect his Academy Award for Best Director of The Pianist (2003). This weekend upon traveling to Switzerland’s Zurich Film Festival to attend a tribute, Polanski was detained by the Swiss authorities.

“According to court documents, Polanski, his lawyer and the prosecutor thought they’d worked out a deal that would spare Polanski from prison and let the young victim avoid a public trial.

But the original judge in the case, who is now dead, first sent the director to maximum-security prison for 42 days while he underwent psychological testing. Then, on the eve of his sentencing, the judge told attorneys he was inclined to send Polanski back to prison for another 48 days.

Polanski fled the United States for France, where he was born.”From CNN.com

My thoughts:
According to the victim – Samantha Geimer, she wants the case thrown out and has been completely humiliated by the bloodsucking media whenever this history is brought to light. Rather than see Polanski rot in jail she wishes it would go away. Samantha, a 45 year old mother of three says she is disturbed by how the criminal case has been handled. In her own words:

“Every time this case is brought to the attention of the Court, great focus is made of me, my family, my mother and others. That attention is not pleasant to experience and is not worth maintaining over some irrelevant legal nicety, the continuation of the case.” – CNN.com

For us movie lovers this will probably be the end of the line for one of the greats. Regardless of the crime, if convicted we can say goodbye to gems like The Pianist, Tess and Chinatown. The case being so old rings hollow to me, it seems more the attempt of someone seeking fame for canning Polanski than the seeking of justice for Samantha.

I don’t understand why “Hollywood” is standing behind this man. He commited a crime and he should be punished. It doesn’t matter wether or not the victim wants the case thrown out, there is a potential that he may commit a similar crime. I realize he’s a well respected director and I’m aware of his tragic loss, however he hasn’t been “on the lamb” he’s actually prospered since leaving the United States. To make matters worse, I haven’t heard of him donating any money or contributing to any charities or non-profits that help victims of a similar crime, and I haven’t heard of him being remorseful.

I can understand France standing behind him, the French tend to back anything that will upset Americans, but “Hollywood”? How many movies have we seen where a hero cop seeks out revenge on a child predator? Besides, it’s not like he’ll be put in general population.

Hey Jerry, while I agree that he should be punished, my pragmatic nature leads me to believe that he will not see any prison time whatsoever. It has been proven many times over that finances plus a good attorney trumps average Joe with mediocre attorney. My point being, Roman has more money than god, the crime was committed an age ago and as you pointed out he has a multi-billion dollar industry backing him. Half of the population could care less about this so the public burning doesn’t factor even in like it normally does. Our system is far from perfect so I believe he will be acquitted.

And to your point, if he committed the crime in question, I am quite sure there have been several victims ever since. It reminds me of Walsh in The Godfather book and movie… its scary because the guy looks very much like Roman and was paying off mothers to have his way with their daughters. If you get a chance, check out the deleted scenes on The Godfather DVD, unless you’ve read the book. The parallels are disturbing.

Very well thought out response and good article to begin with.

I agree, I doubt he will see jail time, and that’s a shame. I’ll see if I can Amazon a copy of “the Godfather” book.

I have a difficult time believing that his behavior ended with Geimer. It’s like a roach, you only see one when you flick the lights on, but there’s more in the wall.

I look forward to reading more of your blogs and articles.

Regardless of what everyone’s opinion is about the man, he admitted to rape and then ran away. It’s a crime no matter how much time has passed. The victim may be over it but that’s not the point either, he’s admitted to the crime he has to do the time…..eventually. Right is right.
