Tokyo Gore Police (2008)

Tokyo Gore PoliceThe blood looks thin, yet flows with a crimson that is akin to fruit punch or cranberry juice freshly poured from the bottle. The volume of it seems endless.  In the world of the Tokyo Gore Police an Engineer’s wounds can shoot a stream of blood so powerful that it could be used as a form of transportation. Just imagine a man with no legs flying around in the air all from the force of his blood flow. There are other Engineers who can tear off their face in order to use the bloody remains as a form of projectile weapon. Some can even wield chainsaws from the bloody stump left from a severed arm… Tokyo Gore Police features a type of villain that defies the realm of reality and everything sane in the dreaded “Engineer”. An Engineer is a mutation of a human being who grows stronger as he/she loses limbs and bleeds. From their wounds a variety of obscene weaponry is produced and they are at their most dangerous when dying.

Plot: Tokyo is plagued by a serial killer who not only cuts his victims up but drains their blood and folds the remains into a box for the police to find. This is in the wake of a new privatized police force who play both judge and jury in their execution of criminals and their patrolling of the streets. It is a world gone mad and the only hope for humanity is a young woman by the name of Ruka (Eihi Shiina), a decorated police officer and a master of the katana.  Ruka is the shining star of the new privatized police and is very good at her job. She is cold, calculating and hell bent on finding the killer of her late father who served on the police force before she did.

I was really impressed with the action and absurd level of nastiness in Tokyo Gore Police, if you are offended by sexual situations you would do best to stay away from this. One scene comes to mind when a rather delicious looking mutant girl was servicing a man only to bite his penis off and hold it up in her teeth (yes you heard me right). One other mutant has been reduced to nothing but a flattened span of skin on top of a chair, the only recognizable part of him/her being a flower resembling an open vagina, spraying urine. The special effects are excellent in some parts but absolutely cheesy in others. While starting out with the severed limbs looking like badly crafted, plastic replicas, towards the end it actually gets better even causing me to cringe at a few things.

With the comedic light of people getting mutilated as the police battle the engineers and the mystery of the dreaded serial killer, I found myself enjoying the story quite a bit. The best part of it all was the mock “commercials” and PSA’s that randomly pop-up to advertise the police, katana swords, hari-kari and other crazy things. It almost seemed as if the movie was poking fun at itself and the viewers who delight in seeing senseless violence. Director Yoshihiro Nishimura is truly a man on a mission to let the blood flow in Tokyo Gore Police and he spares nothing in getting it done. In the end I would 100% recommend it to fans of blood, gore and extreme Japanese splatter.
