“Remember, remember the 5th of November”
It is sometime in the future, the United States is no longer the country it once was, nor is Europe. The tides of war, corruption and disease has led the people of Europe to blindly elect a man to take them away from the misery of Democracy. This supreme leader takes Europe into a period of totalitarian government and issues strict laws and curfews on his people. One young woman named Evey (Natalie Portman) on a matter of circumstance gets swept into the life of a vigilante who is simply known a “V” and has her life changed for the betterment of herself and her country as a whole.
If you are a fan of George Orwell, a champion of Democracy and a skeptic of Government in general then this movie was made for you. It lends nothing new in terms of story, ie: bad dictator, dark hero, damsel in distress, etc., etc. but the way it is carried out is done beautifully. The character of V played by Hugo Weaving is tremendously charismatic. He embodies the stereotype of a Musketeer, charming to a fault, an artist in mind and a warrior at heart. The director does a splendid job of explaining the mysterious V in the few times the dark hero is actually on camera, so that the audience can understand why he does the things he does. Natalie Portman stepped up to the plate and brought the acting we know she is capable of doing (for all you doubters who saw Star Wars Ep.3). It is a beautiful movie, one which I will be seeing many times after, as you probably will too.
It goes without saying that the cynical few who hate movies that lean anywhere towards government or idealogical sketches about our leadership will bomb this flic. I admit that I am one of the opposite, I read 1984 and hold it as one of the greatest books ever written, so in essence V for Vendetta was for me. If you don’t care either way, it is still a great movie, Natalie is still a hottie with the hair gone, and it looked as if she gave her all for this movie. It is definitely a classic, please check it out.
