The House Bunny

housebunny The House BunnyOf course everyone will hate on it but I found The House Bunny to be absolutely hilarious. Anna Faris continues to surf my fanboi nerves because not only is she cute and adorable, she is pretty damn funny in her own right.

The House Bunny is about Shelley Darlingson (Anna Faris), an ugly duckling orphan turned hot Playboy Bunny who gets unexpectedly booted from the Mansion and has to find a way to survive in the real world. Mistaking a sorority house for a miniature Playboy Mansion, she tries to join up and gets rejected by Mrs. Hagstrom (Beverly D’Angelo). Upon leaving the house she is directed to the Zeta house, where she finds a collective of smart, loser types that eventually takes her in and embraces her as house mother.

This is the exact same situation we run into with every college movie. Even the parodies choose not to sway away from the formula of smart, nerdy losers versus the popular, rich, snooty, W.A.S.P. types. The first house Shelley visits berates her for dressing slutty, and being dumb (ironic isn’t i?). The second house that is occupied by obviously smart girls accept her with all her naivete and she rewards this with teaching the girls how to be attractive and acceptable by the opposite sex.

You can take it however you like, which is why I know The House Bunny will be an unpopular movie. The society we live in tends to have a false vail of prudish, political correctness and women will want to burn Anna Faris alive for flaunting her sexuality in a parody of the centerfold model. If you can look beyond the offensiveness of a dumb, pretty girl, you may find this movie as funny as I did. My favorite scenes were the dates that Shelley attended, at one point trying to use shallow, dumb blonde, cuteness to sway a guy who prefers brainy types and another where she brings notes to keep up with an intelligent conversation.

The nerd girl stereotype of course will piss off people who fall into this category in life, since it shows them as bitter and lacking social and hygiene awareness. Snobs always get the short end of the stick so no big surprise there, we get a good dose of stuck up bitch in this movie as much as any other… we all can agree on this, nothing sweeter than seeing one of those girls get a face full of fail. What makes it interesting though is that you will find yourself rooting for Shelley because at the end of the day she is merely an innocent, naive woman whose sheltered Playboy Bunny life has given her a unique outlook on the world.

Her license plate sums the movie up beautifully: “Mean people are Meanies”, and encourages us to take life a little more lightly. If you have a sense of humor and enjoyed the Scary Movie series, then get you some of the House Bunny. I know I did… and I highly recommend it.
