Coach Carter is a movie about a coach who is willing to place respect and character above the game and the ego it brings, he is fought by everyone for sticking to his principles but is able to help a basketball team rise from the dark future and into one of self-discipline and success.
Of course we all knew that this movie was not going to provide any surprises… well can any sports movie break the general layout of: Angry players who don’t get along, new coach comes in and sets new rules, team wins a few games, team starts getting along, team plays big game, team leaves with the ultimate life lesson learnt? Well Coach Carter follows this same template, but somehow it stays entertaining throughout.
Even though it lacked the realism of say Friday Night Lights, the acting and story itself made it easy to like the various personalities and wish them good throughout the movie. Samuel L Jackson seems to get better and better, with every movie he makes and this is no exception. I assumed Ashanti would be awful being that this is the first time seeing her on the big screen, but she pulled it off and did a very good job.
This was not exactly the “feel good” movie of the year but it is definitely a movie to send a message. The coolest part about it is the fact that it’s a true story… well most of it, and the fact that a man took a stance like this and created a successful team from what he was dealt is amazing. If you like good positive stories and movies with a message, check out Coach Carter, it was great.
