If you aren’t a fan of Japanese horror then please stop reading my post. You may call me an ass and ask why I would say something as assinine as that but to tell you the truth, I am being honest. These movies have a niche audience and you end up either loving them passionately or hating them a whole lot. Actually the horror genre in general is like this, either you’re a fan, or you write bad reviews about them due to lack of understanding. Anyway, sorry for the rant, haters kindly leave, horror fans read on…
This film takes it back to the essence, the original Grudge in it’s Japanese form was about a curse that was ongoing… the American version was about a house that held a curse and that’s it. Somehow this movie went back to the original Grudge concept and made it go beyond the house. Aubrey Davis (Amber Tamblyn), sister to Karen Davis (Sara “buffy” Michelle Gellar) of the original, is lured into an old burnt out house by two of the more popular girls in her class. Upon arriving and falling victim to a nasty prank, Amber is cursed with the same affliction that befell her sister… vision after vision of a choking, long haired, Japanese woman and her cat screaming kid. This leads her and a Japanese journalist into an investigation about the origins of the curse.
The Grudge 2 gives us some back story to the original curse. We are treated with more scenes from the family’s slaughter and even an explanation for the throat gurgling noise that the main ghost makes. The story is good enough until a completely random American family is thrown into the mix and the movie makes a turn for confusion. The film feels like two movies in one, where the first seems to end after an hour then the next 30-45 minutes goes into a new family with new issues and similar ghosts… not a good idea.
Overall it was still an entertaining movie. Please don’t let my bad rating fool you, it is still very entertaining a movie to watch… though I found myself laughing more than anything else. The random meowing of the ghost kid… who serves no other purpose than to make me bust out laughing when they show him hiding under desks or stairs and the “Japanese hooker on crack” look of the main ghost as she takes victim after victim. I honestly did not understand what was so scary about her, she just looked like she needed some food and about three hours of good, solid love-making… okay nevermind that, that’s for me not you.
Anyway check it out if you liked the original, my friends and I loved it but it won’t win any awards with the film geeks… and forget my obsession with humping ghosts, just watch the movie.
