Aliens vs Predator: Requiem

alien versus predator requiem Aliens vs Predator: RequiemHearing nothing but good about this installment in the comic book turned movie series genre, I rushed out to the theater to get entertained. Needless to say I was very satisfied with the product, but not surprised by any means. AVP-R is a fun movie, it’s not serious by any means, and if I have to tell you that it isn’t realistic then maybe you need to get out more. What the first movie had in story, this sequel sacrificed in lieu of action and relativity to the original comic books/games. Your girlfriend will hate it and probably you and your boys will love it and buy the DvD… Yes it’s one of “those” movies.

Taking up immediately after the original Sanaa Lathan thriller, AVP-R is about the Alien/Predator hybrid who escapes from the decimated Predator ship into the jungles of Earth. Finding the sewers along with a cast of freshly bred friends, the hybrid unleashes hell on a small town in middle America thus is the plot of our movie. To combat the hybrid, a distress signal from the fallen ship is sent to what seems to be the Boba Fett of predators, to “clean up” the mess that the Aliens started. Flying to earth solo armed with nothing but a vast array of weaponry and the 100 ton balls that predators pack, our Boba Fett unleashes a guerilla war on the Aliens and anyone who interferes with his plans.

The predators are always so damn cool, from the first Arnold Schwarzenegger movie to this one. The consummate warrior, with all fight and style to his character. The Aliens… are still mysterious after about 5 movies dedicated to their ways. The questions that myself and friends have are “how is a queen made?”, “are the Aliens the result of being made, or are they in fact just Aliens?” and “how the hell do they grow to maturity within seconds!?!” None of these are answered in the movie, but they do their normal Alien thing… you know, busting chests, choking victims, shooting eggs down throats, getting in the face of people to show their grill… whatever.

My biggest gripe with the film was the plot… yes I know, if it were a comic book, I probably wouldn’t notice how absolutely unnecessary and worthless the people were in this movie. I know what they were trying to do in terms of giving you a little background so when they get owned you’d feel sympathy but no, it failed badly! The people just took up screen time, and they weren’t just people they were annoying teenagers going through the whole jock versus nerd BS that gets overblown in every movie. There’s a dumb blonde (maybe brunette I barely remember since she was worthless), a prison dude, a struggling teenager and the group of “bullies” who pick on him… a bad cop, and a few pregnant women. Some of them die the others escape, yawn.

The meat and potatoes of the movie was the predator/hunter, cloak… uncloak and kill something… cloak again. It never got old, since well he does have a lot of toys at his disposal. Some of the most memorable toys were his “Space Acid”, the Predator Glaive, the Shoulder Canon, the Predator Spear, and the awesome Laser Net Trap. It was like watching Rambo seeing one being run through an entire army like no tomorrow. In any event, this movie is funny and entertaining, spare your square lady the argument if you’re thinking of making it a date movie… if she’s the “I’ll play videogames with you” type then hell yes take her to see it. I am happy with this sequel, even though the end is very confusing in the way it suggests that I should know the people whom they reveal.
